If it's about a particular airport, include its identifier and the runway. If it's about the app, include your iPhone or Apple Watch model.

Common questions

The compass doesn't match my heading indicator.

Heading comes from your phone's own compass, so mount the phone pointing straight ahead along the airplane's centerline. Magnetic and MagSafe mounts, speakers and other electronics nearby pull it off, so keep the phone away from them. If iOS asks you to calibrate, move the phone in a slow figure eight. Always cross-check against your heading indicator.

Why does target V/S show dashes?

It needs a field picked, a GPS altitude, and a groundspeed above 30 knots, so on the ground it shows dashes. It also shows dashes once you're at or below pattern altitude, since there's nothing left to descend. HIGH means there isn't room left to lose the altitude before the level-off point 3 NM out.

What does STD mean?

Next to pattern altitude, it means the airport doesn't publish one, so the app uses the standard 1,000 feet above field elevation. Next to traffic, it means no direction is published for that runway end, so it's left traffic, per 14 CFR 91.126(b).

How current is the airport data?

It comes from the FAA's airport and runway data, which is reissued every 28 days, and it's built into the app, so it works with no connection. New data arrives with app updates. Check pattern altitude and traffic direction against the current Chart Supplement before you fly.

How do I switch between night and day?

Tap anywhere with three fingers. Day mode is high contrast for a cockpit in full sun, and the app remembers your choice.

Does the Apple Watch app need my iPhone?

No. It has its own compass, GPS and airport data. The compass needs Apple Watch Series 5 or later. When both apps are open, a runway picked on one shows up on the other.

The nearest airports list is empty.

The app needs your location to find them. In Settings, go to Privacy & Security, then Location Services, then Fly by Night, and choose While Using the App. You can still search by identifier or name without it.
